Savannah

I first learned about Savannah through Allan Jacobs' Great Streets, where it's often cited as a near-perfect example of how urban form alone can shape livable streets. Savannah wasn't planned with “walkability” as we define it today, but its repeating ward-and-square system shows how a city can grow incrementally, without losing its human scale.

Once a mid-century bank, the Municipal Grand is now a beautiful, thoughtfully designed hotel — stylish, full of character, and perfectly situated in the heart of Savannah.

inside

I initially planned to separate galleries from shops, but Savannah resists that kind of sorting — galleries sell, shops curate, and everything just feels so intentional.

Here are also two walking routes:

  • Classic — a straightforward walk that stays mostly within downtown, connecting Savannah’s familiar highlights.
  • Exploratory — a more adventurous loop that ventures beyond the immediate downtown.
